Istria Nobilissima Anthology

Autore: Alessandro Damiani

Note biografiche:
Alessandro Damiani, born in 1928 at Sant’Andrea Ionio in Calabria, came to Yugoslavia in 1984, settling down in Fiume where he worked as an actor for many years. From 1957 to 1965 he lived in Rome where he devoted himself to journalism. And he worked as a journalist also when he went back to Fiume ( now he is editor of the newspaper “La Voce del Popolo”), dealing with literary and theatrical criticism. He published the first volume in 1967: the collection of poems and tales “Frammenti”/ Fragments. Soon after were released the bilingual volume of poems “Illudere parvenze di vita”-Dočarati privid ?ivljenja (Croatian translation by Margherita and Stanislav Gilić, introduction by Nelida Milani, Fiume, 1986) and the collection of tales “Ed ebbero la luna” / And they got the moon (preface by Fabio Rosso, Trieste, 1987). He has also published in miscellaneous magazines and volumes his theatrical pieces “Ipotesi”/Hypothesis, “Osim kruha” (Non di solo pane/Not only bread), Aporie/Aporias, “Dal tramonto all’alba”/From dusk to dawn.

Scheda critica:
The bilingual volume (Croatian parallel text translation) entitled “Illudere parvenze di vita – Dočarati privid ?ivljenja” (Fiume, 1986) is a personal anthology of the poetic creation by Alessandro Damiani, and the author included only in IV of the six “Sermones” of the cycle “Satiro ed epicedi”. Did he renounce the others? That collection, having been awarded with the first prize “Istria Nobilissima” 1981, was published in the volume XV of the anthology of the awarded works (Trieste, 1982) and from those editions we take two satire (III and IV) for their thematic.Especially in the third one the tragedy of the exile comes out, event that in the work of the poet, conciliatory indeed on many aspects about the history of these territories after 1945, is followed by other tragedies experienced by the people of different bloodline in the Istrian peninsula.Basically Damiani has been trying to write poetic lines, that intentionally preserve the prose-like writing of essay, about his personal story of the Istrian- Kvarner area, attempting first to understand it and to make us understand the reasons of the facts, without restraining from judgement. So he strictly judges the politics that led to exodus, a “wound still hurting even if time covers pitifully who is wrong and who is wrong”. Nevertheless Damiani doesn’t surrender to discouragement and he hopes to avoid the loss of national identity for those who remained, he hopes that their sons will not live as uprooted in their land, that the new generations of Istria “ kind land to make a difficult drawing of civility” would be able to bear this burden”.
